Thus, I like his character, and love his interplay with Joker (although due to player options, this can be somewhat variable), and at the same time, I don't think he can be easily forgiven for what he's done. He's a sympathetic villain, but a villain nonetheless. There are Akechi detesters, Akechi apologists, and Akechi middle-grounders. It’s only till the end that he realises that he had became the mask and that it was all for nothing.
GORO AKECHI PLUS
It’s through his interactions with the Thieves that he developed some form of attachment but his vengeance overshadowed that before he let those feelings compromise that goal plus in his mind he felt that he was in too deep to turn back. While for the most part it’s a facade there are occasions that Mask slightly peels off showing a genuine side. The way Akechi interacts with others, specifically with Joker is interesting. The way he is portrayed he makes a great foil to not only Joker but the other members of the Phantom Thieves as well as being foils to previous Persona characters. His motivations and plan while evil, very vindictive and came at the expense of others was understandable and if his plan succeeded it would have caused chaos fulfilling his role in Yaldabaoth’s game. I like him as character but not to “he did nothing wrong levels” his backstory is definitely tragic, arguably the most tragic out of all the main party members. If there’s a middle ground I’d want him there. I don’t like the scenario where he dies for pretty much no reason, but I also don’t like the scenario where he’s buddy buddy with my team. Maybe actually helping Sae or something like that. Maybe there’s something post that which includes him atoning for his sins, but what the game has now didn’t sell me on him actually understanding his fuckup.

In my perfect head cannon world, Akechi helps us finish shido’s palace, accepts that we’re not just gonna murder him, then retires from entering the meta verse for the rest of his life.

Putting myself in Joker’s shoes, I wouldn’t want the most soft spoken member of the team, and the most emotionally traumatized member of the team working alongside that killer. I’m not a fan of him just DYING either, but it’s definitely preferable to having him work alongside Futaba, Haru, and Joker. Then he floated the entire thing over their heads and tried to kill them too. He literally killed Futaba’s mom and Haru’s dad, among countless other people. I don’t like the idea of redemption if it means joining the PT.
